چکیده

Background/introduction Osteoid osteoma (OO), a small painful benign bone tumor, is the most common bone tumor in children. Pain is managed with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs but minimally invasive techniques, such as CT-guided laser ablation, have become a standard intervention. However, the potential for non-target injury is a concern as tissue temperature cannot be measured with CT and the laser induces temperatures >90°C for 10 minutes. It also includes risks from exposure to ionizing radiation, fracture, infection and transmitted thermal damage from the access needle. Magnetic resonance guided high intensity focused ultrasound (MRgHIFU) has been used successfully in small cohorts of adults with OO. The noninvasive nature of the energy means that procedures do not need to be conducted in a sterile environment since there is no mechanical penetration of the bone, reducing the chance of pathologic fracture and infection.

MRgFUS new applications in musculoskeletal pathology: a miscellaneous case review

Background/introduction Magnetic resonance guided focused ultrasound surgery (MRgFUS) of the musculoskeletal system achieved significant results in the treatment of painful bone metastases, and recently showed promise for benign bone lesions (e.g. osteoid osteoma) and osteoarthritis (e.g. facet joint syndrome and knee osteoarthritis). MRgFUS works on the main basis of pain relief and tumor cont...

Establishing a clinical service for the treatment of osteoid osteoma using magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound: overview and guidelines.

Recent studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) in the treatment of osteoid osteoma (OO), a painful, benign bone tumor. As MRgFUS is a noninvasive and radiation-free treatment, it stands to replace the current standard of care, percutaneous radiofrequency, or laser thermal ablation. Within an institution, creation of a clinical OO MRgF...

MRgFUS of osteoid osteoma started at the Rizzoli

Background Osteoid osteoma is a bone-producing lesion frequently localized in long bones. The most common presenting symptom is pain with nocturnal exacerbation, responsive to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs [1]. Minimally invasive treatment options have become the standard of care for osteoid osteoma and at present radiofrequency ablation is the treatment of choice [2]. Only one prelimina...

MR-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) ablation for the treatment of nonspinal osteoid osteoma: a prospective multicenter evaluation.

BACKGROUND Magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) is a novel imaging-guided surgical technique that allows the performance of noninvasive and radiation-free ablation. Presently, computed tomography (CT)-guided radiofrequency ablation, a minimally invasive percutaneous technique, is the standard for treating symptomatic osteoid osteomas. The purpose of this study was to evaluate t...

Magnetic resonance guided focused ultrasound surgery (MRgFUS) treatment of osteoid osteoma: a prospective development study

Methods This prospective, IRB approved study involved 29 consecutive patients with clinical and imaging diagnosis of Osteoid Osteoma; all patients underwent MRgFUS ablation (ExAblate, InSightec; Discovery 750 MR unit, GE). Lesions located in vertebral body were excluded; prior RFA or surgery was not considered an exclusion criteria. Patients received therapy using MRgFUS, delivered toward the n...
